The Edinburgh Festival proved a huge triumph for a local Rutherglen actor who was awarded the top acting accolade at the festival. Scott Kyle, from Rutherglen, beat off stiff competition and was awarded the best actor award by Stage Magazine which is a much coveted award at the festival. The competition was stiff, but Kyle won the top prize for his role in ‘Singin’ I’m No an Billy, He’s a Tim’. He celebrated his award, presented to him the evening before his final performance of the festival, and was still feeling the effects as he took to the stage for the final time. In his celebrated role, he plays a Glasgow Ranger’s mad fan, Billy, although Kyle discovered it was not as easy to perform the part after a night of jubilant celebrations.Calls to crack down on fly posting
Posted on 09/06/2010Businesses looking for poster printing in Bolton would be wise to consider where they are looking to advertise their company before going ahead, after the deputy leader of Bolton’s Liberal Democrats called for a change in the process to deal with fly posting. Fly posting is an illegal form of advertising but it can be difficult for the council to enforce the laws against it. Bolton Town Hall chiefs have recently been approached by the government’s Communities Secretary and Transport Secretary requesting a clear up of the streets of the town in terms of signage and advertising hoardings in order to make sign posts more effective and clearer for traffic. However, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats in Bolton, Councillor David Wilkinson, has responded by claiming that the council signs are not the problem in the town but that illegal fly posting can be an issue. He has now called for easier powers to deal with the problem of fly posting in order to crack down on this.

Health study to come to Wrexham

As part of one of the biggest studies of its kind, UK Biobank is looking for Wrexham residents to take part in a scheme that will ultimately look to aid developments in treatments to fight cancer and heart disease. Half a million adults are hoped to be enlisted and volunteers have already been recruited from Swansea and Cardiff. Now, UK Biobank is coming to Wrexham to sign up residents aged 40 – 69 years to take tests which it is hoped will provide insight into why certain adults develop some illnesses whilst others do not.

Summer operas are planned for a village in Oxfordshire for next year and residents of the area fear that their peace and quiet will be destroyed. Now a concerned resident has produced leaflets detailing the opera plans to distribute to other villagers in the area to try to drum up support to protest against the ideas. Turville, near Henley in Oxfordshire was the location for filming TV’s The Vicar of Dibley and now the pretty village is facing an increase in traffic next summer as the Wormsley Estate in the area is looking to become the new venue for Garsington Summer Operas. Organisers for the Garsington Summer Operas are seeking a new venue after their previous lease ran out at Garsington. Residents of Turville are up in arms about the plans that will bring increased traffic to the area and it is felt may disrupt the wildlife of the village as well as villager’s quality of life in this picturesque part of the country.

The familiar mint with a hole in the middle, although an iconic brand in Britain, has not seen an advertising push for a decade and the re-launch will see the fun and quirkier personality of the mint highlighted rather than the ‘fresher breath’ approach taken by most mint brand advertising.
Pope’s visit disrupted
Posted on 08/26/2010Companies offering banner printing in East Kilbride or other areas around Glasgow could find themselves in the middle of a bitter dispute as plans to disrupt the Pope’s visit to the city have come to light. Unions are currently locked in a dispute with Glasgow Life, formerly Culture and Sport Glasgow, that runs Glasgow’s museums and sport centres in the area. It has been discussed that one proposal that unions are considering to highlight their point of view is to print and tie a banner to a light aeroplane hired for the day with the message that the Pope supports their striking workers. Unions have said that they are already looking to discuss with the Civil Aviation Authority any airspace bans that might be in place on the day of the Pope’s visit in September.
Comedy comes to Falkirk

The new stand up comedy festival took place in Bo’ness over the weekend of the 31st July – 1st August. The funnymen appeared at Bo’ness Town Hall with Saturday night bringing the best of Scottish comedy to the area featuring comedians such as Billy Kirkwood, Bruce Morton and Bruce Fummey. Sunday night was stand up night and brought comedians such as Raymond Mearns, Bruce Devlin and Antony Murray to the area. Tickets were sold in local venues and were also available on the night.
Meningitis UK raise awareness of killer disease
Posted on 08/24/2010The campaign to raise awareness of killer disease, Meningitis, got a real boost in recent weeks as the charity Meningitis UK came to the Wisbech area to help educate people on the symptoms and dangers of the deadly disease. The charity took their giant trailer to the local Asda in Wisbech to help raise awareness to people in the area and offering public information about Meningitis. Meningitis UK was founded by Steve Dayman, after his son was killed by the disease in 1982. As the charity came to Wisbech, they were joined by local Kings Lynn couple, Ben Davey and Gemma Norris, who unfortunately also lost their son, Jacob, to the disease in March this year. The charity will have no doubt enlisted the help of printing services in Kings Lynn as it seeks to raise public awareness about the killer disease. Meningitis UK distributed public information packs from the trailer at the supermarket containing leaflets with the symptoms of meningitis, wallet-sized symptom cards and a fridge magnet to remind people to ‘check the symptoms’ of meningitis.

Golden retriever, Gracey, who is only 4 months old, went missing last month having run off from its owner whilst on a walk in Norwich with her owner Marina Jakobsen. In a desperate attempt to raise awareness, Jakobsen had lots of posters printed and put them up all round the Norwich area as well as making a large fluorescent sign to try to attract the attention of any passing drivers. Jakobsen even went as far as placing a front page advertisement in the local Evening News to broadcast her plight.

A stray cigarette was thrown from a tower block in Copenhagen Towers, Weston, Southampton on a day early in August, setting fire to some netting on a balcony lower down. Fire crews were called to the block of flats but fortunately, the residents had managed to contain the fire by that point but it was felt that the situation could have been a lot more serious if it had spread.

The campaign for Reebok’s new Easytone trainers was given a boost with the latest campaign creative featuring model, presenter and actress, Kelly Brook. The impact was helped by the size of the poster but mainly due to the fact that Brook is featured wearing nothing but the Easytone Trainers. Reebok also had Kelly on hand to unveil the poster herself on Battersea Park Road.

Posted on 08/06/2010In conjunction with the launch of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme that has kicked off in London, outdoor advertising company, Clear Channel have devised some advertising opportunities that will help advertisers to target cyclists in the capital. As part of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson’s initiative to encourage Londoners to cycle around their city, Barclays launched their cycle hire scheme. The outdoor advertising sales company, Clear Channel, have claimed that cyclists in London would be twice as likely as car drivers to come into contact and engage with outdoor posters as they are travelling at a slower speed. Clear Channel have therefore put together a package for advertisers to buy poster sites that are within 100 metres proximity of the bike hire docking stations, and also along the route of the Barclays Cycle Superhighway that has been created. The poster sites include bus shelter locations and phone box sites.

The Midlands Air Ambulance, which is a registered charity, said it has been aware over the past few weeks of a private company calling itself ‘Air Ambulance Service’ delivering leaflets to homes in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, asking forclothing donations. The suggestion is that proceeds from the clothing donations would therefore go to an ‘Air Ambulance Service’ but the understanding of the Midlands Air Ambulance Service is that the company distributing the leaflets has no association with any air ambulance service in the area or the country and that people who had concerns about any leaflets they received should ring trading standards office at the council.
